Below is a brief guide to being thrifty in the city. Instead of paying big bucks for some basic supplies, why not spend less on some alternative or cheaper goods?

> You Say You Are Hungry & Need Gas Money? [Greg Gandy]

There are many ways an emerging urban artist, such as yourself, can cope with exceedingly high art supplies and still have some cash left over for gas and food.

The first and most important rule, SHOP AROUND.

Here is a very alluring sign that at first looks extremely tempting, but on dickblick.com the same sketchbooks are 34-46% off.

The paint you use is very important, but it can be expensive. Try using Apple Barrel paint. It is relatively cheap, and it gets the job done. Then, you don’t have to waste nice paint when you are practicing your skills.

While you’re at Michaels, Wal-mart, or such you might want to pick up a couple of cans of spray paint… you can never have enough spray paint.

I am certain that you have picked up a little something about supply and demand in at least one of your history classes, and if not, here is a summary: We want it….  They jack up the prices. The reason for over priced art supplies is as simple as that.  Woot! Woot! Cooperate business!

We are artists, and what are artist all about? Problem solving! So what do we do when a wash brush costs four, five, seven, or twelve dollars?

We do what any pure blooded Mississippian would do…

GO TO HOME DEPOT AND GET THE SAME BRUSHES FOR UNDER FIVE DOLLARS!
Now you have a couple of dollars left over for Wendy’s, and some gas money to get you there.

Have fun being thrifty!
